Renewed Hope

My favorite Tyler Perry film of all time is—hands down—Madea’s Family Reunion.

The 2006 cult classic deals with many themes including battered woman syndrome, childhood abuse, foster parenting, and, of course, finding true love.

However, its true theme emerges and is summed up beautifully in Cicely Tyson’s monologue toward the end of the film: living in honor, service, and respect for one another—our brothers and sisters.

As the elder women of the family lead their ninety-six-year-old matriarch outdoors to enjoy her reunion, they were dismayed by what they saw—men gambling and cussing, women scantily dressed and dancing provocatively, and most dramatically, an argument between a mother and daughter.

What transpired next was one of the most powerful scenes in movie.

As she was witnessing the scene unfolding before her, the matriarch asked the question, Is this what we paid for? Cicely Tyson, then delivered a powerful and impassioned plea to the gathered family members.

“This property was once owned by our ancestors who were once slaves – is a sacred one. Blood, sweat and tears were shed many a night so that this generation can enjoy the fruits of previous hard labor. But instead of showing gratitude and love for another we now have blatant disrespect for one another. What happened? Starting here, starting now— all of us are to take our place.

Young ladies, take your place! You are more than just your bodies. Young men take your place! Go back to respecting, honoring, and providing service to one another. Grab your neighbor by the hand and tell them I’m here if you need a shoulder to cry on, and to provide meals if you don’t have food and shelter if you need a place to stay.”

The scene ended with a lot of hugs and bright smiles. The feelings of angst shared by the family’s elders were replaced with hope, and it’s a moment I recommend watching for anyone struggling to find theirs.

You’ll see what I’m talking about. The faces of renewed hope.
